Advice and opinions you never asked for: Lifestyle, Parenting, & Low-cost Hobbies

Perpetual Hobby Enthusiast

Do you have a favorite hobby? I don’t and I’ve tried all of them. I have tried so many different hobbies that I’m surprised I’m still searching for my favorite. But I do believe I might have cracked the case. My favorite hobby is trying different hobbies. There are some I’d recommend over others for sure so here are my top 3 *pass* hobby trials (obviously it’s my opinion. No shame if one of these is your favorite passion)…

Pottery

If you like to learn things quick and have them come out mostly right or how you envisioned it, DON’T DO POTTERY! I have learned this skill takes a ton of patience, practice, and errors to become good at it. I definitely don’t have patience and it’s a real bummer when you put a ton of time into something just to have it explode in a kiln. I will say it was fun trying to make new things and getting your hands dirty but this is a hobby I’d pass on (even though when something comes out right, it’s amazing). Plus it’s expensive unless you have your own clay, wheel, and kiln.

Painting

Painting was another one I tried and gave up on. I enjoyed it while I did it but I found that the storing of everything wasn’t something I wanted to deal with, especially with a new baby coming into the picture. I also got frustrated easy when something didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to which is not the attitude to have when making art. I like my hobbies to either be relaxing or physical, not stressful and technical. There are other forms of painting I’d want to try besides just brush and canvas that might make me reconsider (think Princess Diaries with the darts and balloons).

Cricut Crafts

Cricut crafts were awesome in theory for me because I love making gifts but I HATED the Cricut. For me it was overwhelming and you needed so much more than just the machine which can get expensive. I made one gift and it was fine but to really get into it, you need the money, the time, and the storage space for it. There are a ton of different Cricuts out there so maybe I just didn’t try the right one for me but if I’m customizing an item, I’d rather just buy it like that than trust me to make it look good.

I still have a ton of hobbies to try that I might pass on but I’m happy I tried them at least once so I know. I would advise anyone to try everything at least once (talking about hobbies here), you never know where you’ll find your calling!
